Wireless AMBER Alerts™ Team-Up with McGruff the Crime Dog®

CTIA Wireless 2007
27 March -- The National Crime Prevention Council’s McGruff the Crime Dog®, a champion for crime prevention and safety and one of the most recognizable icons in America, teams up with The Wireless Foundation to raise awareness about the importance of the Wireless AMBER Alerts™ Initiative and other child safety measures at ShowStoppers during CTIA WIRELESS 2007®.
To date, AMBER Alerts have helped to safely recover more than 320 children. The wireless industry, in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), launched the Wireless AMBER AlertsTM initiative in May 2005 as a way to extend the AMBER Alert program to more than 230 million wireless subscribers.
AMBER stands for “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response” and was created in 1996 when Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to find abducted children. The AMBER Alert program was soon adopted across the nation and is a legacy to Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, and then murdered. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have since established AMBER Alert programs.
Signing up to receive Wireless AMBER AlertsTM is simple and free. All you have to do is log on to www.wirlessamberalerts.org or your wireless carrier’s website and complete an easy registration form. You’ll be notified via text message when an AMBER Alert has been issued in your area, which will allow you to serve as valuable additional eyes and ears for law enforcement in the search effort.
